Search Engine Optimization

Building your Website:

Search Engine Optimization

The best content on the Internet is not much good if no one can find it. Here are some tips to optimize your rankings.

Choose some relevant keywords

These will be used by various Search engines and Directories to narrow their searches. A good place to start brainstorming for keywords are the Google Keyword Tool and the Free Keyword Suggestion Tool from Wordtracker.

One of the best ways to naturally increase your SEO is to implement relevant, repeating keywords and keyphrases throughout the body content on your website. When search engine spiders crawl your webpages, the repeated keywords will help them get a better understanding of what your website is all about.

Repeating the key themes of your website throughout your body content can also help readers better retain what they read, why they read it, and why it's significant to their search. TIP: Be sure to load your first two paragraphs with lots of keywords...crawlers give more relevance to keywords at the start of the body copy.

Here is a useful article about choosing keywords.

Trunity v1.0 and later will automatically insert the Title of your page in the Title metadata and will take the first 200 characters of your page and insert them into the Description metadata, further raising your score in the rankings. Make sure that your Title and first 200 characters include lots of your chosen keywords.

Using Keywords with images

Alt Attribute - We strongly advise the use of a graphic image/photo/illustration on important keyword-targeted pages with the term/phrase employed in the alt attribute of the img tag.

Put your keywords in the Alternative Text field of the Image Properties dialog.

Image Filename
- Since image traffic can be a substantive source of visits and image filenames appear to be valuable for this as well as natural web search, we suggest using the keyword term/phrase in the names of the image files employed on the page.

List on Directories

Write a tight paragraph describing your site. This will be shown in the search results of your directory entry.

Using your tight paragraph, list your site on one or more Website directories. One of the largest and best Internet Directories is the DMOZ Open Directory.

Submit your site to Google and Yahoo

Even though their web crawlers will eventually find it, you should submit your site to Google and  Yahoo for faster indexing in their search engines.

Ranking Factors

Every two years, SEOmoz surveys top SEO experts in the field worldwide on their opinions of the algorithmic elements that comprise search engine rankings. Click HERE for the most recent Survey. Notice that only 15% of the ranking score is determined by "on-page keyword usage". Trust, Link popularity, and Anchor text of external links count for 66%. All of these can be increased by diligent linking. LotusJump Software provides a structured method to increase those factors.
